The presentation attached addressing the Metacomprehension Strategies Index (MSI) was brought forward in EDUC 636- Language and Learning Disabilities instructed by Dr. Shendah Benoit. Presented as a case study of a grade five student that I worked with several years ago, it provides a look into the disparities between the components of reading, decoding and comprehension. The index highlights a useful intervention to develop young reader’s comprehension strategies by using a pre-determined set of questionnaire’s that are to be administered before, during, and after a participant reads a pre-selected passage.

Seen as a tier three reading intervention where educators are able to work directly with students one on one, it provides further insight that Level A reading assessments can’t. Prescribed by proponents of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), the MSI can be used positively with students who struggle with attention-deficit symptoms, as well as those who may require additional Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) supports.

This was important as there was relevance and value to the MSI in my professional practice as it allowed me to further my abilities of administering a tier three intervention, while simultaneously managing a tier one classroom environment.
